CHF Canada — 2016 Annual General Meeting

On June 11, 2016, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development addressed the delegates at CHF Canada’s AGM. Mr. Duclos advised the delegates that the Government was committed to helping Canadians in finding affordable homes.  They wanted to empower Canadians so that are able to share in the Canada’s prosperity and build better life for themselves.

The following are a few other highlights from Mr. Duclos’ speech:

  • $2.3 billion (of the budgeted $3.4 billion) will be targeted to improving access to affordable housing.
  • The Government will consult with the provinces and territories amongst others to develop a national housing strategy
  • Over the next two years, they will provide approx.  $600 million to support renovations and energy and water efficiency retrofit of existing social housing units, to help make them more affordable to operate and reduce their environmental footprint.
  • Investing in housing and social infrastructure is about building stronger communities.

In July, CMHC announced a new program: Reno/Retro 2016: Funding for Repairs and Retrofits to Social Housing Units. It was an opportunity for co-ops to seek funding to help improve their community and improve their building structures. The retrofit program is a positive step in helping to us to continue to provide affordable housing to our members.
